Ranking the Grey's Anatomy 5 Most Problematic Couples
These senseless, chemistry-less and outright toxic pairings had no place on Grey's Anatomy, but they have a spot on our list.
Grey's Anatomy has seen many, many relationships, but quantity does not mean quality.
These characters may have been good on their own, but their relationships were unbearable for several reasons.
5. Jackson Avery and Maggie Pierce
Before 'Japril' was forever, there was 'Jaggie,' and it was not pretty. The pair shared no chemistry, but they did share Richard Webber, Maggie's dad and Jackson's 'stepdad'. If the incest wasn't a big enough problem for them, the pair seemed to genuinely hate things about each other. Maggie detested Jackson's privilege, Jackson was patronizing towards her, and the pair's relationship was riddled with awkward and uncomfortable moments, like their disaster camping trip.
4. Amelia Shepherd and Atticus 'Link'
Amelia has a history of treating her partners poorly, and Link suffered the brunt of this. He tried hard to make things work, despite Amelia's impulsiveness and fear of commitment, even proposing to her after she gave birth to their son Scout. After everything, Amelia still rejected him and ran away, leaving Link to pick up the pieces. It felt like their whole relationship was one-sided, especially after Amelia moved on to Kai.
3. Alex Karev and Jo Wilson
The problems in this relationship were easily missed as we swooned over two broken people finding love in each other.
In reality, it was filled with secrets and mistrust. Alex was brash and impulsive, and nearly beat DeLuca to death over a misunderstanding. Jo has already been in an abusive relationship (and lied about being married) and Alex's aggressive behavior affected her hugely. After fighting so hard for, and against each other, their exhausted relationship came to an end when Alex infamously abandoned everyone, via letters, to be with Izzie.
2. Cristina Yang and Preston Burke
Their mentorship-turned-relationship was as toxic as anything. Ego-maniac Burke was condescending and controlling, punishing Cristina by barring her from surgeries, forcing her to give up her apartment and live with him, and expecting her to keep his hand tremors a secret.
Cristina idolized and respected him, and he used this to manipulate her. It all came to a head when he forced her to agree to marriage, only to have a moment of conscience on their wedding day, and leave her heartbroken and confused at the altar.
1.Owen Hunt and Christina Yang
This relationship was a war in itself.
Owen selfishly pursued Cristina upon returning from Iraq, despite having PTSD. He was physically and emotionally abusive, and Cristina was afraid of him.
Owen tried to force Cristina to have children and then cheated on her seemingly because she chose to have an abortion. Then he brought Teddy, who he had a history with, in as a 'present' for Cristina, and eventually (thankfully) chose Teddy, who ended up cheating on him.
And if we count the supernatural, then Izzie and ghost Denny would be high up on the problematic list too.
