Rachel Zegler Fires Back at Snow White and West Side Story Casting Backlash
Rachel Zegler is hitting back at the furor over her casting in Snow White and her West Side Story breakout, opening up in a frank new interview about early-career backlash, debates over her heritage, and what critics got wrong.
Rachel Zegler is back talking about the noise around her casting — both the early blast of attention from West Side Story and the ongoing discourse about playing Snow White. It is a lot, and she is not tiptoeing around it.
What she is addressing
In a recent interview, Zegler looked back on how fast things escalated after her breakout in 2021 and how the conversation around her 2025 live-action Snow White role kept getting dragged into debates about her identity. She is Colombian and Polish, and says the feedback was maddeningly contradictory — one corner told her she was not enough for one role, another insisted she was too much for the other.
'It was a really confusing time to be in my early twenties and hearing that.'
She says she has always been proud of her background and the traditions she grew up with. That did not make the public parsing any less intense.
'But I do think there is an argument to be made that, in the public eye at least, when you are two things, you are simultaneously nothing. But I refuse to assimilate for anybody else's comfort.'
And the volume was not just online sniping. She says the scrutiny came with real-world risk and the kind of hostility you do not plan for when you are just starting your career.
'If I had been able to predict everything that would come my way, the threats to my safety, I would have just thrown my phone into the ocean. I think any sane person would have.'
Context, quickly
- West Side Story (2021): Her breakout role drew debate over whether she was the 'right' fit, with some critics questioning if she was 'enough' of what they expected.
- Snow White (2025): The live-action lead role triggered the opposite kind of backlash, with voices arguing she was 'too much' of something else.
- Where she stands: She is done trying to calibrate herself to make other people comfortable and is not interested in shrinking to fit anyone's boxes.
There is a lot of projection in these kinds of casting fights, and Zegler is basically saying she is not going to carry it for everyone. Snow White lands next year. Expect the noise to keep buzzing, and expect her to keep answering it on her terms.
