Project Hail Mary Crowned One of the Decade's Best — Ryan Gosling's 4-Word Reaction Says It All
Two weeks before it hits theaters, Project Hail Mary is already rocketing on early buzz, with press and celebs touting it as one of the decade’s best — and Ryan Gosling answered with just four words.
Project Hail Mary hasn’t even hit theaters yet and the early buzz is loud. The twist? Ryan Gosling’s big reaction to all the hype is four words long, and it’s very on brand for this story.
Gosling’s press stop turns into a love fest
Ryan Gosling swung by The Tonight Show to plug Project Hail Mary and brought partner Eva Mendes with him, then surprised her with a birthday serenade. The movie talk still stole the segment. Jimmy Fallon told Gosling he fell hard for the film, calling it:
'one of the best movies I have ever seen.'
Gosling joked about slapping that on the poster, because of course he did.
The early reactions are already in
Fallon then started reading from a stack of early reactions. The highlights were not subtle. One outlet flat-out said the movie is perfect. Another critic called it a flawless big-screen experience and put it in the 'best of the decade' conversation. Gold Derby went spiritual, basically saying the whole thing feels like a miracle. And Variety? They went big:
'a masterpiece and an epic cinematic achievement.'
The four-word response
After all that, Gosling’s response was simple and cut right to the core of what this story is actually about:
'It is about a teacher.'
Not the blockbuster pull-quote anyone expected after being showered with superlatives, but it tracks.
- Beyond critics, the movie is getting love from boldface names too — Jeff Bezos and Alicia Silverstone are among the folks who have already chimed in with praise.
What the movie is
Adapted from Andy Weir’s novel (a New York Times best seller), Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, an astronaut who wakes up alone in space with no memory of who he is, why he’s there, or what went wrong. As the pieces click into place, he realizes he’s the last survivor of a mission to the Tau Ceti system to stop a disaster threatening Earth. He starts doing the impossible with whatever he’s got: smarts, improvisation, and a stubborn will to keep going. On the way, he meets an alien — Rocky — who’s on a parallel mission to save his own world, and they end up working together.
The rollout
Project Hail Mary opens in theaters on March 20, 2026. Amazon MGM Studios is releasing it in the U.S. and Canada, while Sony Pictures Releasing handles the rest of the world.
