Chucky and Crystal Lake alum Callum Vinson joins Prime Video’s God of War as Kratos’s son Atreus, starring alongside Ryan Hurst.

Time for Ryan Hurst to warm up those Boy bellows. Prime Video has its Atreus: Callum Vinson, the young actor you might have clocked in Chucky and Long Bright River, is stepping into Kratos' kid-sized boots for the God of War series.

Meet Atreus (and why he matters)

If you skipped the controller era, Atreus is Kratos' 10-year-old son, and in the 2018 Santa Monica Studio game you eventually take control of him for a stretch. He grew up tucked away in a forest cabin, mostly raised by his mother, Faye, far from... well, pretty much everyone. After Faye's death, Kratos has to become the whole support system while the two trek through a world swarming with monsters and would-be gods. Atreus is an eager hunter with a bow that sings, a knack for magic, and a shapeshifting streak that complicates (and supercharges) their journey. The father-son dynamic starts off frosty — Kratos is all granite and rules — but mile by mile he eases up, teaching the kid how to survive without snuffing out his spirit.

The cast so far

Vinson joins Hurst, who is leading the show as Kratos. The rest of the lineup is stacked with familiar names and a few inspired picks:

  • Max Parker as Heimdall
  • Teresa Palmer as Sif
  • Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor
  • Mandy Patinkin as Odin
  • Alastair Duncan as Mimir
  • Jeff Gulka as Sindri
  • Danny Woodburn as Brok

Where things stand

Pre-production is underway in Vancouver. Prime Video has already locked in a two-season order, which reads like confidence on paper and leaves the door open for more if the show hits the way everyone hopes.

Who is Callum Vinson?

Besides Chucky and Long Bright River, Vinson popped up in The Night Agent. He is also playing Young Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake, with Linda Cardellini headlining as Pamela Voorhees alongside Danielle Kotch, William Catlett, Cameron Scoggins, Joy Suprano, Brian J. Carter, Nancy Nagrant, and more.

Big swing, big potential

God of War lands under Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions on deck. Prime Video just proved it can translate a beloved game into bingeable TV with Fallout. Apply that level of care here and Kratos' cycle of rage, redemption, and hard-earned grace — plus all that thorny father-son push-pull — could make for a killer series. I am very ready for this one.
