Prime Video just pulled the plug on one of its best-reviewed new series before it even had a chance to hit Season 2.

Well, that was quick. Prime Video has pulled the plug on the coming-of-age racing drama 'Motorheads' after just one season. The twist: the team behind it is already shopping Season 2 to other streamers, so the story might not be over yet.

So, is 'Motorheads' dead?

Not necessarily. Per Deadline, Prime Video canceled the series roughly three months after its May 20 premiere. Season 1 ran 10 episodes. Amazon did give the producers permission to take the project elsewhere, which is industry-speak for: future seasons are up for grabs if another platform wants them.

'We set out to make a show with no agenda and a lot of heart, to give families something they can watch together. While Johnny and I are disappointed Motorheads won't be continuing at Prime Video, we couldn't be more proud of what the team created,' executive producer Jason Seagraves said, referencing creator John A. Norris.

'Despite going into release with impossibly low audience awareness, our passionate and vocal fan base led the charge and made the series impossible to ignore. Their enthusiasm has energized us, and we're optimistic we'll find a home that believes in and supports the show.'

What the show is (and why this is a little surprising)

'Motorheads' is a high school story about a group of outsiders who bond over street racing and cars, and end up helping each other navigate the messiness of life. It wasn't a critical flop either — far from it — which makes the speed of this decision feel a bit inside baseball (translation: marketing and awareness can matter more than scores).

  • Creator: John A. Norris
  • Cast: Michael Cimino, Melissa Collazo, Ryan Phillippe, Nathalie Kelley
  • Premiere: May 20 on Prime Video
  • Season 1: 10 episodes
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 78% critics, 95% audience

The bottom line

No Season 2 at Prime Video. But the producers are actively pitching it elsewhere, and with those audience scores (and a vocal fan base), there's a non-zero chance a different streamer takes a swing. If it lands, expect Season 2 to live on a new platform.
