After years of doubt, the Black Pearl may have its captain back — an influential insider delivers the most promising update yet on Johnny Depp’s return as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

The long-running will-he-won't-he around Johnny Depp returning as Jack Sparrow finally got a meaningful update, and it comes from the guy who would know best: producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Bruckheimer weighs in, clearly

On the awards circuit this weekend, Bruckheimer was asked point-blank if the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie is sailing ahead without its signature pirate. His response did not waffle.

"First of all, that's not true."
"No, no, no. Johnny... if it's up to me, he'll be in it."

That matters. Bruckheimer has produced all five Pirates films, so his fingerprints are on everything from tone to casting to how big the cannons fire. If he wants Depp in the sixth movie, that is a strong wind at Jack Sparrow's back.

What that means for Pirates 6

Recent chatter in February suggested the next film could center on Jack Sparrow's son, which lines up with the whole 'passing the torch' trend. That idea still plays just fine with Depp involved. A cameo or a supporting turn from Jack could bridge generations and smooth the handoff without sidelining the character that made the franchise a monster hit.

Where Depp stands right now

Depp's interest has been the other big variable. Back in mid-2023, someone in his orbit said the door was open and that a comeback was on the table. Then in August 2025, Bruckheimer said he'd already spoken with Depp about slipping the tricorn back on and added:

"He would do it"

with the usual caveat: it depends on the script.

  • Producer Jerry Bruckheimer says the idea that Pirates 6 is moving forward without Depp is false.
  • He wants Depp in the movie and, given his history with the franchise, that carries serious weight.
  • Plans rumored in February 2026 point to a story focused on Jack Sparrow's son; Depp could still appear to connect eras.
  • Depp has kept the door open since 2023; talks in 2025 suggested he'd return if the script clicks.

Bottom line: nothing officially announced yet, but the tide is shifting the right way. If Bruckheimer gets his way, Jack Sparrow isn't done sailing.
