Penelope's Dress Foreshadowed Bridgerton Season 3, but Nobody Noticed
The devil is in the details.
For a show based on a romantic novel series, Bridgerton can certainly surprise fans. Even if you've read all of Julia Quinn's books, you may still find yourself on the edge of your seat when following the love adventures of the Bridgerton siblings in Regency-era London.
The twists and turns added to the book storylines are not the only thing that keeps the huge Bridgerverse fandom on their toes. The creators have also come up with a compelling visual language for the show that adds to the plot, speaks to the viewer, and even includes hints and nods to future episodes.
It has long become a sort of a hobby of the show's fan community to analyze every flower arrangement and costume worn by the characters. And they don't do it in vain. Bridgerton Season 2 lead costume designer Sophie Canale told People that every outfit and look is created with a deeper meaning in mind.
Canale thus confirmed the compelling Season 2 fan theory that originated in Episode 4, when Penelope Featherington suddenly cheated on her usual yellow color scheme with a mint green dress. A few eagle-eyed viewers noticed that and speculated that it meant the upcoming season based on Penelope and Colin Bridgerton's love arc. You see, green is a mixture of yellow and blue, which is the Bridgerton family's signature color.
Nobody knew then that the Bridgerton creators would decide to change the order of Quinn's books and adapt the fourth novel before the third. The announcement came as a shock to everyone except those who saw the Easter egg in Penelope's green dress.
'I've known for a very long time. I forgot actually that no one else knew,' Sophie Canale commented on the overhaul, 'That's useful as a tool to know where your characters are going as well.'
The designer added that mixing characters' signature colors to reflect what's going on in the plot is nothing new for Bridgerton. In Season 1, the blue of the titular family was mixed with the red of Simon Basset after he married Daphne.
'When you see Daphne, we pushed her into lilacs in Season 1 because of the marriage of the families and I think that's quite important to be seen,' Canale said.
So keep your eyes peeled, dearest Bridgerton fans, who knows what else the outfits might tell us about the beloved characters.
