Penelope Deserves More: Fans Demand Colin's Redemption Arc in Bridgerton Season 3
Does Penelope deserve someone better than Colin? So far, many viewers think so.
As season three of Bridgerton approaches and fans become increasingly excited about its central couple, some viewers feel that Colin Bridgerton still needs to grow and develop as a character and worthy love interest for Penelope Featherington.
The season two finale saw Penelope lost and heartbroken. Her whole arc leading up to this moment has been a wild ride.
Of course, many of her troubles came from her secret identity, Lady Whistledown, but her love interest Colin also contributed to Pen's pain. She had a crush on Colin ever since they were children, and even though the two characters were friends, Colin never took Pen seriously, constantly ignoring and treating her with disrespect.
What's worse, he unintentionally hurt Penelope when he referred to her as a friend rather than a woman he could see himself pursuing. And later, he repeated the same message — but in an even more hurtful way, while talking to his male friends who ridiculed Penelope:
"I would never dream of courting Penelope Featherington," Colin admitted in the closing moments of the second season. Pen overheard his words, and she was devastated.
Fans agree that watching her reaction was especially painful, so now many are convinced that Colin needs a redemption arc in season three — otherwise, he wouldn't be worthy of the admirable woman that Pen is.
Viewers have even come up with a storyline to show a change in Colin's attitude towards Pen in the next season: the writers should give her a suitor (or two) and make Colin upset about it. This development would serve as Colin's wake-up call, and it would make him finally see Penelope as a capable woman who can live without him — rather than his lifelong buddy who's always around.
However, we must also note that Penelope hasn't been a perfect character either, and she also needs some redemption for her past actions.
Both Pen and Colin are quite young and seem very immature at times, so before they can form a healthy relationship, these characters have a lot of growing up to do — and fans hope to see the couple working through their issues together and influencing each other's development in Bridgerton season three.
