Ian seems to be in big trouble this season.

Starz's Outlander is probably one of the most popular fantasy shows on the air right now, and even though the last few seasons have been a bit of a drag to watch, the currently airing season 7 is already proving to be one of the most compelling ones in the show's history.

The recently released third episode shocked fans by having Jaime and Claire's house burn down, with all the possessions they had picked up in America being destroyed in the blaze. Now it looks like young Jamie got an even tougher deal than his uncle or his wife.

After Jamie and Ian find out that Arch and Murdina Bug stole some Jacobite gold, they naturally confront the thieves. A fight breaks out. Ian tries to kill Arch, but because it's dark, he ends up accidentally killing Murdina, a person he actually loves and cares for. With blood on his hands, Ian will now be reassessing his entire life, and it seems that actor John Bell might have given fans a fair warning about his character's grim future.

'He loved Murdina. He is going to be wrestling with a lot of emotions that I think he probably thought were behind him. It's all coming up again, this idea of "Am I a good person if I kill so easily? If I murder so easily, is there something wrong with me?",' Bell said.

To add insult to injury, Arch now seems deadset on ruining Ian's life for killing Murdina. Arch confronts Ian at Murdina's funeral. The pure soul that Ian is, he asks Arch to kill him as repayment for his mortal debt, but Arch refuses, and instead promises that Ian will see him again as soon as he has something worth taking.

While fans were relieved that Ian wasn't killed, they were also worried by Arch's ominous threat, as it was clear that he had resolved to retaliate in kind by taking away from Ian someone he loves, which could be a lover or a child. The notion of a grumpy old man murdering an innocent woman or a child just to get back at the person who loves them may sound outrageous, but that's exactly the kind of nightmarish reality that Outlander characters inhabit, so Arch's threat should be taken with all seriousness.

Outlander Season 7 Episode 4 will arrive on Starz on 7 July 2023.
