They say that if you hold onto a dress long enough, it'll eventually become trendy again.

Indeed, classic works never grow old and continue to resonate with audiences. However, remaking a classic film or TV show can be risky, as fans can be unforgiving if the new version falls short.

The original Night Court aired for nine seasons from 1984 to 1992. It was a sitcom set in the Manhattan Criminal Court, following the court's night shift and the young, eccentric Judge Harold Stone.

In 2023, NBC revived the show, with the sequel featuring the daughter of Judge Stone and the original prosecutor now acting as a public defender. And fans of the original show have had plenty to say about it.

Overall, no one is pillorying the new Night Court. Fans seem to agree that the revival isn't terrible. Calling it mediocre might be too harsh, but it's fair to say it's not exactly great, either.

The main character Abby, played by Melissa Rauch (who you may recognise as Bernadette from The Big Bang Theory), is perfect as the late Judge Stone's successor.

Dan Fielding from the original sitcom also has adapted well to the new setting, as though there weren't three decades separating the shows. However, the new series does have some issues.

Many fans argue that although the supporting cast is excellent, their characters are rather bland.

This is a huge problem, as the sequel should have started strong with well-written characters, especially when introducing new ones. Fortunately, there's still room for these characters to be 'retooled', as some suggest.

Furthermore, the courtroom setting seems almost inconsequential at this point, as the judicial aspect of the show is only given cursory treatment. The new Night Court appears to be just another workplace sitcom. Oddly enough, some fans of the original show even claim that the sequel feels like it's aimed at Disney Channel viewers.

'I don't know if the old series was shown later at night, or if things were just different then, but this series is far too "nice",' one Redditor wrote.

Perhaps the new Night Court's 'niceness' will eventually fade, seeing how a second season has already been greenlit. The final episodes of season 1 are set to air on 11 and 25 April.
