OOC Scene Lifted From the Books is About to Ruin Outlander's Season 7
How would you feel about Claire if she were to cheat on Jamie?
The hit Starz show Outlander is based on the eponymous book series by Diana Gabaldon, telling the story of World War II British nurse Claire Randall, who accidentally travels through time and finds herself in Scotland in the 1700s.
There she meets and falls in love with the handsome Highlander Jamie Fraser, and the two have many adventures together.
Those who read Gabaldon's books came to Starz prepared for everything, including disturbing graphic scenes of violence and torture and plot twists that sometimes hurt the beloved characters. But some fans of the show are just now catching up on their reading in preparation for the upcoming seventh season — and they don't like what they're finding.
Season 7, which premieres in just two months, is based on the sixth and seventh books, titled A Breath of Snow and Ashes and An Echo in the Bone.
It is the seventh book's spoilers that prompted one of the show's fans to start a Reddit discussion about the storyline, which is so out of place for one of the main characters that it could potentially ruin the season if adopted on-screen.
In the book, Claire marries again. This time, her husband is Lord John Grey. Since he is gay, this marriage is not out of love or passion but because Claire needs protection after Jamie supposedly dies at sea and she is about to be arrested for espionage. But that's not what bothered the Redditor the most.
The scene that feels completely out of character is when Claire and Lord John get drunk and have sex. Even worse, they do it to feel closer to Jamie, and they don't stop at just one time.
The on-screen Claire that fans know and love would never betray the love of her life like that. Cheating Claire screams like a completely new, unknown, and unlikable character. Yes, she thinks Jamie is dead and never coming back, but is that really the best way to grieve?
While some fans explained in the comments that the context makes the situation less horrific and more relatable, there are many viewers who hope never to see the sex scene between Claire and Lord John in the adaptation.
