Only 3 Series Managed to Achieve This Rare Feat, and Warrior Nun is One of Them
Restoring a show after it's been canceled is near impossible.
This year has been one hell of an emotional rollercoaster for the Warrior Nun fandom. When the project was canceled after Season 2 last year, people were devastated by the news and decided to fight Netflix to get the series renewed at all costs. And their efforts finally paid off, as it was recently announced that Warrior Nun would be revived in the form of three full-length movies!
In this respect, the fate of Warrior Nun is almost unprecedented. In fact, only two shows managed to achieve the same rare feat as Warrior Nun after being canceled by Netflix.
Of course, we all have to thank the streaming giant for breathing new life into some popular and unfairly canceled series like Arrested Development and Lucifer, but the fact that Netflix has been axing many of its own hit series has been troubling fans for some time. Consider, for instance, the truncated finale of Sense8, the cancellation of the shows based on Marvel characters, and American Vandal being cut short after just two seasons.
As for Warrior Nun, the cancellation was even more painful to the fandom because of the show's unique narrative, empowering female cast, and queer characters. After the series was officially cut short last year, it became obvious that all Netflix (and other streaming services, for that matter) cared about was ratings and money, not the audience's response and representation of marginalized minorities.
Long Before Warrior Nun, These 10 Canceled TV Shows Were Saved by Fandom
With this in mind, it seems a miracle that Warrior Nun got renewed, as only a couple more shows among those canceled by Netflix have enjoyed the same fate. The two lucky series are One Day at a Time and Uncoupled.
Debuting in 2017, One Day at a Time soon became popular with fans of comedy and social criticism, as the sitcom delved deep into the issues of mental health, immigration, and racial prejudice. Netflix canceled the show after three seasons, but fortunately, it was picked up by Pop, making it the first series to move from the streaming service to traditional television.
Sadly, the show didn't last long on Pop either, as COVID-19 caused One Day at a Time to be canceled for good after one more season.
Uncoupled is an equally entertaining romantic comedy, starring Neil Patrick Harris as a non-straight character. The first season had high ratings but was canceled by Netflix for inexplicable reasons. The project was picked up by Showtime in February of this year, and production for Season 2 was scheduled to begin in July but was canceled due to the WGA strike.
Unfortunately, it looks like fans of both Uncoupled and Warrior Nun will have to wait a long time before seeing their favorite characters on screen again. With American actors joining the writers in the strike, the fate of those sequels is up in the air.
