The actor feels 'there was so much left on the table' for his character, who was brutally and boringly killed off.

Summary

  • Joe Manganiello wasn't supposed to play a main character on True Blood.
  • The actor thinks his character's ending could have been more interesting.
  • Manganiello's co-star was luckier in that her character was more fleshed out, even though she wasn't meant to be a lead either.

The clash between vampires and werewolves is perhaps a classic fantasy trope, having been explored in many popular productions such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Twilight Saga. HBO's cult fantasy horror drama True Blood is another example of the fan-favorite genre.

Premiering in 2008, True Blood quickly proved popular with audiences thanks to its Southern atmosphere and mysterious plot, which was also full of love triangles and suspenseful romances. In addition, the fantasy horror drama had a stellar cast that included Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Carrie Preston and Alexander Skarsgård, as well as Joe Manganiello. Interestingly enough, Manganiello wasn't supposed to be a main character on the show at all.

Joe Manganiello's Journey on True Blood

Added to the cast in Season 3, the actor was expected to make a few appearances during the installment and then be written off the show. But Alcide turned out to be so popular with viewers that Manganiello was quickly promoted and remained on TB until the seventh and final season. Unfortunately, even his popularity wasn't enough to save him from a horrible demise.

'I wound up on the show for five years in total, but my character had to get out of the way so that Sookie could wind up settling the A and B plots with Bill and Eric. And the only way to get me out of the way was, spoiler alert, to shoot me in the face and drop me,' Joe Manganiello recently commented on his departure from the show.

Needless to say, the actor was none too happy with the way his character was disposed of on the show. In particular, he's still a little bitter that Alcide's ending didn't give him a sense of closure, as there were a lot of unexplored possibilities for him. As a result, Joe Manganiello is still obsessed with playing a werewolf in another project.

The Luckier Co-Star

Holly Clearly, portrayed by Lauren Bowles, was also introduced to the show in Season 3 of True Blood, where she was supposed to make several brief appearances, too. However, the character grew on the audience and became part of the main ensemble starting in Season 4.

During her time on True Blood, Holly was perfectly fleshed out and became one of the ultimate fan favorites. As a very powerful witch, the character helped Sookie and her vampire friends a lot on the show, which is perhaps why she wasn't killed off like Mangamiello's Alcide at the beginning of Season 7 and managed to complete her arc much to the audience's satisfaction.

As for Joe Manganiello, it would be exciting to see him play a werewolf in another project.
