One Piece Joins Star Wars & Marvel as Top Franchise of 2023
The new Netflix show is accompanied by well-established media giants.
It's been two weeks since the release of Netflix's adaptation of One Piece, an immensely popular manga series by Eiichiro Oda. Yet, the live-action show remains the talk of the town as fans have been impressed by its quality, especially considering the streaming service's previous less-than-stellar attempts to adapt manga/anime series.
Faithful to the source material, Netflix's One Piece revolves around the Straw Hat Pirates in their quest for the enigmatic and powerful titular artifact. Arguably, it's the producers' close adherence to the original story that has significantly contributed to the audience's adoration of the show. As a result, it's now ranked among the top franchises of 2023.
Franchises Rule as 2023’s Most Popular Properties
When a film or show achieves a certain level of popularity, it typically evolves into a franchise. There are numerous film series that encompass a multitude of big and small screen installments spanning years. Harry Potter, Star Wars, and the Marvel Extended Universe are just a few prominent examples.
Interestingly, franchises have also been the most successful in terms of revenue and popularity with audiences, at least in 2023, but nobody is sure why that has been the case.
'Franchises made up 95% of the top blockbusters and games in 2023, yet there has been no single unified view on what's capturing fan attention and why,' Perkins Miller, the CEO of Fandom, told Variety. 'The Franchise Factor framework gives creators, producers and marketers actionable insights and tools to strengthen their franchises in an increasingly competitive landscape.'
Spot in Top Three and Bright Future Ahead
Although the Netflix show premiered just a little over two weeks ago, it has proven sufficiently popular with fans to secure third place on Fandom's list of the top 25 entertainment franchises. With a score of 72% (the company doesn't disclose their measurement method), the One Piece franchise, which now includes Eiichiro Oda's manga, the eponymous anime series, and the Netflix show, has entered the competition alongside Star Wars and Marvel, which are ranked first and second, respectively.
Given that the show has already been renewed for a second season, it's expected to keep going from strength to strength.
