One Piece 1170 Quietly Reveals Why Luffy Didn’t Beat Kizaru and the Gorosei on Egghead
One Piece Chapter 1170 spoilers hint at why Oda kept Luffy from going all out against Kizaru and the Gorosei in Egghead, turning their bruising showdown into a calculated stalemate that sets the stage for what comes next.
One Piece Chapter 1170 spoilers just did something sneaky: they basically explain why Luffy didn’t steamroll Kizaru or the Gorosei in the Egghead Island anime. If you’ve been yelling at your screen about why Gear 5 wasn’t melting everyone, this might be your answer.
So what actually happened on Egghead?
- Luffy vs Kizaru: absolute slugfest, no clean winner. Both took and dealt real damage. Call it a draw.
- Luffy vs the Gorosei: visually bonkers, but their nonstop regeneration made a straight-up victory impossible.
- End result: the Straw Hats pulled a smart retreat instead of a knockout.
Why didn’t Luffy go all out?
The short version: Chapter 1170 spoilers point to Oda holding back on purpose. If Luffy had coated his attacks with Conqueror’s Haki, the implication is he could have ended both of those fights, Elders included. And the spoilers go a step further, hinting at a technique similar to one Loki used to take down King Harald — who was supposedly immortal. If that sort of move works on an immortal heavyweight, then Luffy, who is stronger, could plausibly pull off something similar. Which raises the obvious question: why didn’t he?
Because blowing through Kizaru and the Elders right there would crush the pacing and undercut the long-term stakes. In other words, plot armor — for the antagonists this time. Also, it kind of fits Luffy’s brain-on-vibes approach to combat. He doesn’t always min-max in the moment, and Conqueror’s coating isn’t exactly his default button mash.
"Now we know why the anime director didn’t want Luffy using conquerors coating in Egghead. Luffy would’ve straight up been able to defeat the Gorosei."

What the anime side says
This tracks with what animator Vincent Chansard has said: Luffy wasn’t directed to go fully serious against Kizaru. The point of that clash was to pin Kizaru down and hurt him, not erase him from the board. When you look at the fights with that note in mind, the choices line up.
Stack Conqueror’s coating on Joy Boy-level Haki, and yeah…
Luffy with Conqueror’s coating on top of Gear 5 and that Joy Boy-grade Haki pool is a walking balance patch. If he ever chains those together at full tilt — especially with a move in the ballpark of the Loki vs Harald technique the spoilers tease — the Elders are in trouble. Honestly, even Imu would have reason to worry. And if the Drums of Liberation kick in on top, the whole thing becomes less a fight and more a seismic event. It really feels like Oda is saving that switch flip for the moment it will break the world in half.
