Award-winning MCU actress shares the intriguing story of how she auditioned for the hit sitcom.

When it comes to our favorite long-running shows like Big Bang Theory, it's nearly impossible to envision anyone else portraying the characters we've come to know and love. However, in the world of television, it's common for various actors to be considered for the same role during the directors' quest for the right fit.

While some casting choices would certainly be intriguing to see, others might raise eyebrows. And as it turns out, one of the most polarizing Marvel Cinematic Universe stars, Brie Larson, came close to joining the TBBT ensemble.

The Academy Award winner and Captain Marvel actress, Brie Larson, has been acting since 1998. Her career took off gradually, with supporting roles in various projects such as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) and 21 Jump Street (2012). However, she achieved her breakthrough in 2013 with the drama Short Term 12, and she further solidified her reputation with an Oscar-winning performance in the drama film Room (2015). Eventually, she landed the iconic role of Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in the MCU.

In a surprise revelation, Larson shared on her YouTube channel that she auditioned for a role in TBBT. The actress explained that although the crew was kind throughout the audition, she didn't land the role because she was considered too young (she was 18 at the time). Now, she didn't specify which part she auditioned for. However, speculation points to the role of Penny, as Larson physically resembles Kaley Cuoco, who was eventually picked to portray the character. Additionally, Penny was the only major female character at the start of the sitcom.

While there's no doubt that Larson is an exceptional actress, it's hard to picture anyone else but Cuoco playing Penny, as portraying this happy-go-lucky, protective, and caring character came naturally to her.

Besides, casting a younger actress in the role would've caused concerns, especially considering how Penny was over-sexualized in the show's early days as a contrast to the geeky male characters. Not to mention that Larson herself has spoken out against white male movie critics, so that probably wouldn't have aged well.

It's certainly nice to wonder how the Captain Marvel actress would've fared as Penny or another character. However, the show's legacy wouldn't be the same, and Larson's career trajectory would've been completely different as the show's long run from 2007 to 2019 would've limited her from taking on other projects. Ultimately, the decision not to cast her turned out to be a wise one for all parties involved.
