One of DC’s Mightiest Heroes Is Finally Joining the DCU, Report Says
The DCU is about to go nuclear: a new report says Creature Commandos Season 2 will unleash Captain Atom, one of DC’s most powerful heroes. The animated follow-up was announced in December 2024 and still has no release date.
File this under: interesting rumor with real potential. A new report says Captain Atom is headed to the DCU via Creature Commandos Season 2. If true, that is a heavy hitter to drop into Gunn and Safran's sandbox.
The rumor and what it actually says
Nexus Point News claims Captain Atom will show up in Creature Commandos Season 2 as a recurring character. No casting info yet, and no specifics on how he fits into the story. For now, this is not confirmed by James Gunn.
- Character: Captain Atom (the Nathaniel Adam version)
- Status: Reported for Creature Commandos Season 2, recurring role
- Voice actor: Unknown
- Confirmation: None from James Gunn as of now
- Sources: Report originates with Nexus Point News; Abdul Azim Naushad reported it for SuperHeroHype, and ComingSoon also ran the story
Which Captain Atom are we talking about?
There have been two main Captain Atoms in comics history. Charlton Comics had Allen Adam, a rocket tech who gets atomized by an experimental rocket blowout and comes back superpowered. The DCU rumor points to Nathaniel Adam, the DC Comics take who first showed up in Captain Atom vol. 3 #1.
Nathaniel is an Air Force pilot and Vietnam vet who volunteers for a wild government experiment. It blasts him into the future, slaps a strange metal shell called Dilustel onto his body, and leaves him working under U.S. government oversight. Power-wise, he is no joke: super strength and speed, flight, energy absorption, matter generation, and he can actually fight thanks to his military background. He is routinely framed as one of DC's strongest heroes.
If you have not read the books, you have probably still seen him around. He has turned up in Justice League Unlimited, Young Justice, and the animated movie Superman/Batman: Public Enemies.
Where Creature Commandos stands right now
Season 2 was officially announced in December 2024, before the Season 1 finale even hit. There is no release date or window for Season 2 yet. James Gunn created the show and wrote all seven episodes that have been released so far. The voice cast includes Indira Varma, Sean Gunn, Alan Tudyk, Zoe Chao, David Harbour, and Frank Grillo, among others.
Why this matters (if it pans out)
Captain Atom is the kind of power level that instantly raises the stakes, even in an animated project. If Gunn introduces him in Creature Commandos and audiences respond, that is an easy bridge to a live-action debut later. Again, this is a rumor for now, but it would be a smart way to seed a major player into the DCU without overpromising.
