Netflix is teeing off with a new Will Ferrell-led golf comedy — and he’s reuniting with Old School co-star Luke Wilson after big-screen hits like Anchorman.

Will Ferrell is heading back to TV, and he is bringing an old friend to the tee box. Netflix has added Luke Wilson to Ferrell's untitled golf comedy, which takes place in the world of pro golf. If that pairing gives you 'Old School' flashbacks, you are not imagining it.

The dynamic

Per Variety, Wilson is playing the guy who just will not stop beating Ferrell:

"a pro golfer who has beaten Ferrell's character for the tour championship twice before."

So, yeah, that is a built-in rivalry. Ferrell is the fictional golf legend at the center of the show, and Wilson is the tour nemesis who already has two wins over him. Clean premise, easy to get, and fertile ground for Ferrell-level stubbornness.

The reunion angle

This is the latest Wilson-Ferrell team-up after their early-2000s run: 'Old School' (2003), 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy' (2004), and 'Blades of Glory' (2007). Different sport, same chaos potential.

The basics

  • Platform and format: Netflix comedy series, 10 episodes, set in professional golf.
  • Will Ferrell: Plays a fictional golf legend; executive producer via Gloria Sanchez Productions with Jessica Elbaum and Alix Taylor.
  • Luke Wilson: Plays a pro who has already beaten Ferrell's character in the tour championship twice.
  • Main cast so far: Molly Shannon as Stacy; Chris Parnell as Anton; Katelyn Tarver as Natalie; David Hornsby as Radford; Jimmy Tatro as Lance; Fortune Feimster as Sam.
  • Executive producers: Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, and Nena Rodrigue for T-Street; Chris Henchy; Harper Steele; David Gordon Green; Andrew Guest.

Why this is interesting

Ferrell has not anchored a major TV series in a minute. His last big TV outing was Apple's 2021 limited series 'The Shrink Next Door.' Since then, he popped up in Prime Video's rom-com 'You are Cordially Invited' with Reese Witherspoon, and he is also attached to star opposite Zac Efron in the comedy feature 'Judgement Day.'

Also, the producing roster here is a fun bit of inside baseball: you have Ferrell's Gloria Sanchez on one side and T-Street's Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, and Nena Rodrigue on the other, plus Chris Henchy, Harper Steele, David Gordon Green, and Andrew Guest. That is a lot of distinct comedy and filmmaker DNA for a sports comedy. Not complaining.

Title and premiere date are still under wraps. For now, we have a Ferrell-led golf world, Luke Wilson as the guy who keeps taking his trophies, and a creative team that suggests this will be more than just mulligan jokes. Though, let’s be honest, there will be mulligan jokes.
