OFMD Season 2 Finale Was Too Predictable (But We Loved It Anyway)
The show once again proved to be the perfect comfy watch.
Summary
- The season ended with Blackbeard and Stede choosing each other over their pirate careers, and fans saw that twist coming a mile away.
- However, the fact that the final twist was predictable didn't ruin the season at all, and in fact made it even more enjoyable and endearing.
When Max premiered Our Flag Means Death early last year, no one thought a show following the lives and trials of LGBTQ+ pirates would become a massive hit, but this shockingly feel-good project from Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, and David Jenkins managed to prove the naysayers wrong almost immediately. And with Season 2 turning out to be even better than the stellar first outing, it looks like the streaming giant finally has a comedy hit that will last.
The second season was full of exciting twists and turns, and the fact that the writers managed to keep the feel-good vibes while upping the ante was really impressive. However, there is still one problem that prevents the second outing from being called a true masterpiece - the predictability of its finale.
Endgame Pairing
Season two began with Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet living separate lives, which was really hard to watch as we loved the romantic chemistry between the two and the idea of them never being together was a hard pill to swallow. However, no one really thought they would end up separated once again, as it was clear from the first season that Gentlebeard was the endgame.
So, when Blackbeard left Stede to become a fisherman in episode 7, fans were not even worried about them falling out, as it was clear that the writers were simply breaking the two up to reunite them in the season finale.
And that's exactly what happened, as the season ended with Stede and Blackbeard opening their own inn and refusing to sail the seas as pirates anymore. The finale was as happy as it could have been, but the fact that we could see it from a mile away became a bit of a letdown.
However, it's clear that such predictability is just a minor annoyance, and fandom has already declared the second season of Our Flag Means Death to be one of the best streaming events of the year, as the amount of positive vibes and hilarious jokes was just too great to be ruined by a predictable happy ending.
