OFMD Season 2 Finale Twist Doesn't Mean There Won't Be a Season 3
David Jenkins knows exactly where he wants to take the love storyline of Stede and Ed.
Summary
- Our Flag Means Death Season 2 ended on a bittersweet note, but this is not the show's finale, if David Jenkins has his way.
- The showrunner has already mapped out the storyline for Season 3.
- If Max greenlights the third installment, it should be the final one, focusing on a more mature stage of the relationship between Blackbeard and the Gentleman Pirate.
Our Flag Means Death (OFMD) ended on a bittersweet note. While the crew of The Revenge suffered some devastating losses and welcomed unexpected new members, protagonists Stede Bonnet, aka The Gentleman Pirate, and Ed Teach, aka Blackbeard, seem to have found their happily-ever-after, hatching plans to restore and run an inn together.
But is this really the end? Not if you ask showrunner David Jenkins.
Showmaker has Season 3 plotted out in his head
Jenkins sat down with Inverse to talk about what's in store for our favorite pirate couple if Max greenlights the sequel, which is a no-brainer given the hype around OFMD and the reported ratings of Season 2.
‘I have plans for season three,’ the creator said. ‘I would love it if Max had plans for season three, because I’d love to make another season of a show with them. I think they’re a great place to make a TV show. But season three would be the last season.’
The showrunner revealed that the potential Season 3 will be a kind of third chapter in the book of Blackbeard and the Gentleman Pirate's relationship.
If Season 1 was about the first crush, and Season 2 was about two people in love taking the first steps, like having sex for the first time and moving in together, Season 3 should take another step forward and show the couple in a more mature stage, the stage that usually comes after the fairy-tale happy ending and is not shown on screen.
‘What happens after you start a small business together? How does that work? How do you keep a relationship going? What are the problems in a relationship that are more than just like, oh, does he like me or does he not like me? How do you be a person for that person, and continue to grow with them? What happens if one of them stops growing and you keep growing?’
These are the questions Jenkins intends to answer in Season 3. And if you feel that the last few sound a bit heavy-handed and might hint at Stede and Ed's growing apart and final breakup, cheer up, the creator sounds pretty optimistic about the couple's chances of sticking together through thick and thin.
‘We need more love stories where we see this love mature,’ are his exact words.
