While the actor hasn't kept his iconic role, others will reprise their roles in the James Gunn-led DCU.

Summary

  • DC is undergoing significant changes with the arrival of James Gunn.
  • Henry Cavill will not be returning to play Superman, despite being universally loved.
  • Three smaller superheroes are being kept as they are by the studio.

Since James Gunn took over DC in 2022, the studio has seen many major changes. Most notably, it has announced a complete reboot of its many fan-favorite projects, which means replacing beloved actors with fresh faces. The replacement of Henry Cavill with David Corenswet is probably the most lamented by fans.

In total, the actor has portrayed Superman in three films, starting with 2013's The Man of Steel, with a few more uncredited cameos in other DC installments. Over the decade, fans have grown accustomed to the charismatic and charming actor's performance as the studio's central character, which is perhaps why they are so upset about his replacement.

To make matters worse, DC is retaining some of their actors. Check out these three names!

Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle

This year's DC alum was reportedly praised by James Gunn for his performance in the studio's latest premiere. Portraying the titular character, a Mexican boy who gets a hold of an alien device that gives him superpowers, Xolo Maridueña was hailed by critics and audiences as the best part of Blue Beetle. On the other hand, the film itself failed to impress viewers and barely recouped its budget, grossing around $129.3 million at the box office.

Viola Davis as Amanda Waller

Appearing in two installments of Suicide Squad, the Oscar-winning actress stunned viewers with performances that were unanimously cited as the best parts of both movies. With that in mind, it's no surprise that James Gunn is keeping this charismatic actress in his version of the DC Universe. Thus, Davis is expected to make a cameo appearance, albeit in voice form, in the upcoming animated series Creature Commandos.

More importantly, Viola will star in her own Max show – Waller – dedicated to her iconic DC character. Both projects are set to premiere in 2024.

John Cena as Peacemaker

Making his debut in the Suicide Squad reboot, John Cena played Peacemaker – an off-putting self-antagonizing superhero who sincerely believes that the end justifies the means. As such, Peacemaker isn't afraid to use any means necessary to achieve peace – even if it means killing a few dozen people.

The character was further endorsed by James Gunn and received his own namesake series on HBO Max. After its release at the dawn of 2022, the show was quickly renewed for a second installment that hasn't premiered yet.
