Nicola Coughlan Hints Bridgerton S3 Will Be Steamier Than Previous Installments

One of the many reasons Bridgerton is so popular with audiences around the world is its spiciness. Aside from the sizzling romance, polite 19th-century-style dialogue, and gorgeous costumes, the steamy sex scenes are arguably what draws the most viewers to the hit Netflix show.

Season 1, which premiered in 2020 and followed the love story of Daphne Bridgerton and Duke Simon Basset of Hastings, is the epitome of steaminess. As the duo explored their feelings for each other, things got hotter and hotter between them. Season 2, which centered on the romance between Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma, also had its share of sensual moments. But it looks like the upcoming third season will be the steamiest yet.

Despite the order of Julia Quinn's novels from which Bridgerton is adapted, Season 3 of the Netflix period drama will focus on the transformation of Colin and Penelope's relationship as the two go from childhood friends to lovers after the third Bridgerton brother realizes the depth of his feelings for Featherington.

Unlike his older brothers, Colin has been very reserved about his desires and love in general because he doesn't think he's met the right girl yet. But once he realizes that it's been Penelope all along, nothing will hold him back and he'll learn what lust is. As a result, Polin's arc may end up brimming with steamy moments.

An On-Set Incident

It's still unclear how many sex scenes Colin and Penelope will have. But it's obvious that they will be very passionate, as the actors admittedly ruined some props while filming them.

'We did break a piece of furniture while doing one of those scenes,' Nicola Coughlan who plays Penelope on Bridgerton said in a recent interview. 'I didn't know what it was gonna be like, but it's a little bit like a stunt in which they're like, "Okay, we're gonna do this, this, and this." But then they gave us freedom to like… we had a lot of say in how we did those scenes and what we wanted to do. And that makes you feel quite empowered,'

According to the actress, both she and Luke Newton, who plays Colin on the show, had a wonderful time filming the steamy scenes, which were safe, yet fun and enjoyable. Most importantly, they turned out so hot that Coughlan even insisted that a PG version of the third season be prepared for her family to watch.

'It's literally written into my contract,' she said. 'People think I'm saying it as a joke. I just don't want to. I grew up Irish Catholic. That's just not how we vibe.'

Needless to say, that sounds exciting! Luckily, it's only a little over a month until Season 3 of Bridgerton premieres on May 16th.
