The galaxy’s most complicated family drama just added a new chapter: Star Wars: Legacy of Vader unveils a tense, never-before-seen face-off between Ben Solo and Luke Skywalker, offering fresh insight into their fractured history.

Star Wars canon just got a new wrinkle. Marvel dropped a reveal this week that quietly rewrites when Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker last faced each other. Short version: their final moment in The Last Jedi was not actually their final moment. The comics add one more encounter — after death.

So what did the movies leave us with?

On-screen, the last time Kylo and Luke meet is on Crait in The Last Jedi. Luke is not physically there — he is projecting himself from Ahch-To to stall the First Order so the Resistance can escape. Once they get away, Luke lets go and dies, worn out but peaceful.

What the new comic changes

The book is Marvel Comics' Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, set between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker and focused on Ben Solo’s history with the Knights of Ren. The latest issue, out this week, reveals that Kylo crosses paths with Luke again — as a Force Ghost.

  • Ben heads to the Sith Meditation Chamber at Fortress Vader and gets pulled into a nasty vision: think haunted swamp and a chorus of disembodied, mocking heads.
  • He realizes he has unintentionally slipped into the afterlife.
  • Luke’s Force Ghost appears. Ben demands to know who killed him. Luke says he chose to sacrifice himself.
  • Ben presses him on why he trained Rey instead of him. Luke’s answer is simple:

"She wanted to learn."

Ben, furious, threatens to find a way to destroy Luke even in death. Luke calmly tells him that is not happening — and that maybe Ben should focus on the bigger question: how did he even reach the afterlife in the first place?

Why this matters (beyond the lore trivia)

If you thought Crait was the final Luke-Kylo moment, the canon now says there is one more, and it happens after Luke’s death. It is a small but telling character beat: Ben demanding an external culprit for Luke’s death, Luke owning the choice, and Rey’s motivation spelled out in a single, pointed line.

Meanwhile, on the big screen

Next up in live-action, Din and the kid are headed to theaters. The Mandalorian and Grogu will mark the duo’s big-screen debut, with Pedro Pascal joined by Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White.

"The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his young apprentice Grogu."

The Mandalorian and Grogu opens May 22, 2026.
