The shocking twist at the end of the first episode is in place.

Dan Fogelman's series Paradise has been released on Hulu. It begins as a detective story about the mysterious murder of a president, continues as a drama about broken families, and then delivers a shocking plot twist that turns the viewer's understanding of everything they have seen upside down.

What Is Paradise About?

This morning started out as usual for Xavier Collins. Alarm, jog, off to work. Collins is the head of security, protecting the President of the US. Until recently, Xavier did his job perfectly. But this day changes his whole life. When he arrives at the mansion, he finds the president's body on the floor.

The cameras show nothing, there is no murder weapon, no strangers have entered the house. The last person to see the head of state alive seems to have been Collins himself: they had spoken the night before.

Paradise Episode 1 Ends With a Shocking Plot Twist

An attentive viewer will notice oddities from the very beginning. For example, where did Xavier's wife go? Why is she not with her family? Why does the president not live in Washington, but in some suburb? And what about the strange, recurring talk about paradise?

By the end of the first episode, it becomes clear that the murder is only a small fragment of a huge picture that the audience will have to piece together with the main characters, traveling in time, sometimes to the past, sometimes to the present.

Before Paradise, Fogelman Created Another Successful Intricate Show

Showrunner Dan Fogelman found his winning formula in 2016. That's when This Is Us debuted, exploring a family's history through the lens of a detective.

Each episode offered new details and surprises that helped viewers piece together the extensive Pearson family tree and sort through the tangle of problems, grievances and psychological trauma.

Showrunner Follows the Path of This Is Us But Raises the Stakes

In Paradise, Fogelman ups the ante. A dystopia is added to the mix of a fast-paced detective story and a sentimental family drama.

To bolster its position, the showrunner invited one of the best actors from the previous show, Sterling K. Brown, to play the lead role. In the nearly decade since This Is Us was released, he has managed to receive an Oscar nomination for American Fiction.
