New Lord of the Rings Movie Has Zero Chance at Box Office Success
The iconic universe will flop next year.
Summary
- LotR will return to the big screen next year, but fans are not sure if the movie will break even.
- The decision to make the movie in the anime style will have a major impact on its box office results, and not in a good way.
- The bad release date will further ruin the movie's chances of making at least some money at the box office.
Although most people are completely unaware of it, the year 2024 will actually be a year in which the Lord of the Rings franchise will finally return to the big screen, and it has nothing to do with Amazon Prime and its Rings of Power.
The thing is, Warner Bros. will premiere a brand new animated film, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and it looks like the producers are indeed hoping to make a lot of money with their latest foray into J.R.R. Tolkien's universe.
However, it seems that both analysts and fans are certain that the upcoming animated film, which centers on Helm Hammerhand, a legendary King of Rohan who will be voiced by Brian Cox, will flop at the box office, and here's a bunch of reasons why.
Different format could hurt movie's appeal
Ever since Peter Jackson premiered the first part of his Lord of the Rings trilogy in 2001, the high fantasy genre has seen a new wave of popularity, with people obsessing over anything that remotely resembles Jackson's vision. Unfortunately, quantity does not always equal quality, and only a few projects over the last twenty years have been able to at least partially replicate the success of The Lord of the Rings, but none have been able to surpass it. Meanwhile, audiences have become disenchanted with the genre.
However, this is not the only reason why the upcoming movie will fail to appeal to the masses - people are used to seeing LotR in live action, and the idea of following the familiar characters in animation may not sound as exciting to many.
In addition, The War of the Rohirrim will be made in the style of Japanese anime, a genre that is not as popular in the West as it is in Asian countries, as 2D animation is considered a bit outdated compared to the 3D masterpieces that Disney and DreamWorks are known for.
The worst time to release
Moreover, people are more than sure that Warner Bros. decision to premiere The War of the Rohirrim on December 13, 2024 is quite bad, as the movie will be forced to compete with two massive blockbusters - Thunderbolts and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which will premiere just one week later and will totally smash the animated movie.
It looks like the upcoming movie is going to lose a lot of money, don't you think?
