Summary
- Fans of Community have been waiting for the big screen adaptation for a decade.
- The star of the show is sure that the movie will start shooting in 2024.
- The original cast and showrunners will return for the film.
Greta Gerwig's Barbie was the biggest hit of 2023, grossing a staggering $1.44 billion at the box office, proving that it was worth the wait, as the movie has been in development since at least 2014. And it seems it's not the only movie with such a complicated history.
Community: The Movie has also been in the works since 2014, when season 5 of the popular NBC sitcom ended. As the years went by, fans of the show got more and more excited about it. However, the last couple of years have been very disappointing, with multiple production announcements and delays. Now, it seems that the long-awaited movie is finally coming to fruition.
Joel McHale's Optimistic Update on Community: The Movie
In a recent interview, Joel McHale, who played the lead character, Jeff Winger, on Community during its six-year run, shared his understanding that the movie would be filmed this year. Previously, the actor said that the movie would be shot in 2023, which meant that the script was ready, but it seems that McHale hasn't read the new version yet.
'We go to the center of the earth. It's like the movie The Core,' the actor joked about the premise of Community: The Movie. 'I really do think it's happening this year, and probably next week. It's basically working around Donald's schedule.'
Finally, Joel McHale, following his previous statements about the production and its status, said that he would be 'shocked' if Community: The Movie doesn't happen this year.
The Past and Present of Community: The Movie
In 2022, NBC's streaming service Peacock announced that it would produce Community: The Movie, with Dan Harmon, the sitcom's creator, and Andrew Guest, whose writing credits include 30 Rock, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Hawkeye in addition to Community, set to pen the script. By 2023, the first version of the script was ready, but then the strikes happened and the writers had time to reinvent the story for the movie.
Now it's finally happening with Danny Pudi, who played Abed Nadir on the sitcom, directing the movie, which is said to revolve around a college reunion at Greendale Community College. He will also reprise his role alongside McHale, Donald Glover (Troy Barnes), Alison Brie (Annie Edison), Gillian Jacobs (Britta Perry), Jim Rash (Craig Pelton), Ken Jeong (Ben Chang) and Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley Bennett).
