Netflix’s Untamed recruits Mission: Impossible alum Shea Whigham for Season 2.

Untamed is packing heat for Season 2. Netflix locked in Shea Whigham, Eric Bana is back in the saddle, and the new mystery heads straight into the lava fields of Hawaii. Good setting, better cast.

The new case

Season 1 ended with National Park Service agent Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) hitting the road. Season 2 picks up with Kyle in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, digging into the death of his son. Along the way, he crosses paths with Ray Burkart, a businessman played by Shea Whigham, who looks like he is going to be a key piece of the puzzle.

Fresh faces in the lineup

Whigham joins as Ray Burkart, and he is not the only new player. Kelly Hu (The Orville, Arrow) signs on as Awapuhi, a woman who spent the past few years on O'ahu processing the loss of her son. Now she is back on Hawaii Island to confront what she left behind. That is a loaded character setup, and it fits this show's taste for morally murky terrain.

Bana is ready to roll

Season 1 carved out a Yellowstone-meets-Ozark vibe in the national parks, and Bana sounds fired up to keep it going. The hope is that new episodes arrive early next year, but official timing is still under wraps.

"I am absolutely thrilled that we get the chance to bring another season of Untamed to life. The response to Season 1 has been a testament to the incredible effort by our crew to deliver something truly unique. I can't wait to take Kyle on his next journey. Massive thanks to Netflix, John Wells Productions, Warner Bros. Television, and our fans."

Why Shea Whigham matters here

Whigham, 57, brings that steel-eyed authority you hire when the story needs pressure. He broke out opposite Steve Buscemi on Boardwalk Empire as Nucky Thompson's kid brother and has been a reliable highlight ever since. A quick refresher on where you have seen him:

  • TV: True Detective, Fargo, Homecoming (with Julia Roberts), Perry Mason, American Primeval, Lawmen: Bass Reeves
  • Early film highlight: Tigerland with Colin Farrell
  • Blockbusters: Mission: Impossible (as Jasper Briggs, on Ethan Hunt's tail), Fast & Furious (FBI agent Michael Stasiak across three entries)
  • Indie and studio standouts: Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Take Shelter, Joker, Kong: Skull Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, Silver Linings Playbook

Outlook

Untamed leaning into a murder investigation on the Big Island is a smart escalation. Volcanic landscapes, heavy grief, and a businessman who probably knows more than he is saying? Bring it on. I will update once Netflix plants a release date or drops a trailer.
