Gangs of London star Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù takes the badge in a gritty new adaptation as the first Black sheriff in a Bible Belt county, locked in a deadly hunt for a serial killer.

Netflix is stitching together neo-Western grit and Southern Gothic shadows for a serial-killer manhunt, and it sounds gnarly in the best way. The streamer is turning S.A. Cosby’s acclaimed 2023 novel 'All the Sinners Bleed' into a nine-episode thriller, with Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù leading the charge and Joe Robert Cole running the show. On paper, it looks like a binge-magnet.

Here’s the setup: Dìrísù plays Titus Crown, a former FBI agent who becomes the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. He steps into a job that has only ever seen two murders, then gets hit with a nightmare — a serial killer who has been quietly targeting the county’s Black community for years, supposedly in service of God. The deeper Titus digs, the more the trail winds through a local church and the town’s own scarred past, while far-right agitators and old resentments keep the tension humming. Cosby’s book gets called southern noir for a reason — it blends atmosphere and anger with real momentum.

Dìrísù has been a force in Gangs of London and popped up in Black Mirror, Humans, Slow Horses, and Netflix’s own His House. This time, the whole series rests on his shoulders — and he feels like exactly the guy you want carrying a story this tense and character-driven.

'The specificity of the world S.A. Cosby created truly swept me away, and Titus Crown seized my heart,' creator Joe Robert Cole said.

Cole knows his way around scale and stakes. He co-wrote Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, worked on American Crime Story and All Day and a Night, and now he’s serving as showrunner, writer, and executive producer here — plus he’s directing the first episode. The creative pedigree is strong, and the partners behind it don’t exactly scream small either.

  • Lead: Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù as Sheriff Titus Crown
  • Source material: S.A. Cosby’s award-winning 2023 novel 'All the Sinners Bleed' (aka southern noir with teeth)
  • Format: Nine episodes
  • Creative lead: Joe Robert Cole (showrunner, writer, EP, directing the premiere; credits include Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, American Crime Story, All Day and a Night)
  • Producers: Higher Ground Productions (founded in May 2018 by Barack and Michelle Obama), Amblin Television, and S.A. Cosby
  • Ensemble cast: Leila George (Disclaimer), Daniel Ezra (All American, The Running Man), John Douglas Thompson (The Gilded Age, Mare of Easttown), Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus, The Last of Us), Nicole Beharie (Miss Juneteenth, The Morning Show), Andrea Cortés (Mayans M.C., On My Block), and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Residence)

Between the genre mash-up, the church-and-community undercurrents, and Dìrísù finally getting a full-on star-vehicle, this one has serious promise. Netflix is clearly betting on it to be the kind of propulsive, talk-about-it-all-weekend thriller that lands hard — and sticks.
