Netflix Canceled It, But Boots Season 2 Isn't Dead Yet, EP Teases
Netflix may have canceled Boots Season 2, but executive producer Brent Miller says the queer military drama isn’t done yet, teasing ambitious new storylines and a real path to revival.
Netflix axed Season 2 of the queer military drama 'Boots,' but the team behind it is not packing it in. Executive producer Brent Miller says there are real plans for where the story goes next and, more importantly, a plan to take the show somewhere else if Netflix is out.
Miller is pushing for a new home
Miller told Variety that if his late mentor Norman Lear were here, he would be telling them to keep fighting and rally the audience. And yes, that includes getting loud about it.
"He would empower myself, our fellow EPs, and Sony to do everything humanly possible for our actors, writers, and producers to try and find ourselves a new home."
"And of course, he would have encouraged the fans to make their voices be heard in the loudest ways possible to ensure a Season 2 - wherever, whenever."
Translation: the producers (with Sony) are actively trying to move 'Boots' to a new platform, and they want fans making noise while they do it.
What Season 2 was going to be
This is not a vague maybe. Creator Andy Parker already had the direction locked: a bigger, darker pivot that puts the characters directly into combat.
"Our creator, Andy Parker, had always intended to take the boys to war in a Season 2."
Quick refresher on 'Boots'
- Based on Greg Cope White's memoir 'The Pink Marine'.
- Stars Miles Heizer as Cameron Cope, a closeted teen in the 1990s who enlists in the Marine Corps.
- His best friend Ray McAffey, played by Liam Oh, signs up with him.
- Set during a time when LGBTQ people were banned from serving openly in the military.
- Season 1 followed the pair through the brutality of boot camp, the bonds they formed with other recruits, and the awkward, often painful process of figuring themselves out in a place that did not want them.
So yes, Netflix passed on Season 2. But Miller is very publicly nudging fans to speak up while he, the other EPs, and Sony shop the show around. If that effort lands, 'Boots' could still march into a second season somewhere else.
