The actress feels 'blessed to have had this amazing career.'

Summary

  • Kate Winslet has starred in James Cameron's biggest movies, Titanic and Avatar.
  • Despite Titanic's cult status, the actress is more often recognized for another popular work.
  • Winslet doesn't think much of her own contribution to the Avatar franchise.

Actors definitely benefit from the success of the movies they star in. But that doesn't necessarily mean their highest-grossing films are their favorites.

Kate Winslet, who shot to world fame after the release of James Cameron's Titanic in 1997, has starred in many films throughout her extensive career. But while the Oscar-winning flick, which remains the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time, made her famous and, she says, allowed her to buy an apartment in her early twenties, it's another role that makes her feel fulfilled.

People's Recognition

Although Titanic is still a cult movie, beloved by generations of viewers, it's not the one that people give Kate Winslet credit for.

'People come up to me in the street more about The Holiday and the episode of Extras that I did than Titanic,' the actress revealed in a recent interview, referring to her 2006 romantic comedy.

Written and directed by Nancy Meyers and starring Jude Law, Cameron Diaz and Jack Black, The Holiday follows two lonely women from opposite sides of the pond who decide to swap homes for the upcoming Christmas and holiday season. And that just happens to be enough for them to find happiness.

'Actually, what's so lovely is that mothers and daughters come up to me in the grocery store and they say, "Oh, Kate, we just love The Holiday. It's our little ritual at Christmas." And they have things that they eat every year. They sit down. It's a tradition. And I just love that. That's something I never would've expected actually, the sort of mother-daughter connection around a film like that,' Kate Winslet elaborated.

Avatar? 'Oh, yeah, I'm in Avatar'

What's even more amusing is that the actress barely remembers that she starred in the second installment of James Cameron's Avatar, which is the third highest-grossing film in the world. Winslet doesn't look down on the movie. In fact, she's too modest to think highly of her brief contribution to the fan-favorite franchise.

'It's really funny with Avatar because, you know, Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington and Sigourney [Weaver] – it's been a part of their life for so long. And I honestly kind of went in and had an intense two months [of shooting The Way of Water] back in 2018,' the actress said.

So even though James Cameron's two films have grossed over $4.5 billion combined, they don't mean as much to Winslet as The Holiday's $206 million.
