National Society of Film Critics Crowns One Battle After Another Best Picture
Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another dominated the National Society of Film Critics, taking Best Picture and a clutch of top awards.
Paul Thomas Anderson is having one of those seasons where you just keep adding trophies to the shelf. His epic political thriller One Battle After Another, led by Leonardo DiCaprio, keeps racking up critics hardware, and now it just took the top prize from the National Society of Film Critics at their 60th annual vote on Saturday.
That Best Picture win came with more love for the film across the board: Anderson also picked up Best Director, Benicio del Toro was named Best Supporting Actor, and Teyana Taylor took Best Supporting Actress. The train does not seem to be slowing down for this movie, which has already clicked with groups like the Gotham Independent Film Awards and the New York Film Critics Circle.
Elsewhere, Ethan Hawke won Best Actor for Blue Moon, while Jafar Panahi landed Best Screenplay for It Was Just an Accident, and Autumn Durald Arkapaw won Best Cinematography for Ryan Coogler's Sinners. It was a strong spread for Sinners and The Secret Agent in general, with both showing up repeatedly as runners-up and winners. Also: the nonfiction winner has a title that feels like three titles duct-taped together, and the Best Director runners-up list includes Richard Linklater for Blue Moon and, oddly, something also called Nouvelle Vague. That is how the group listed it, which is... a choice.
