Fresh off the Stranger Things finale, Natalia Dyer signs on for Amazon MGM Studios romantic comedy Goodbye Girl, joining a cast led by Kiernan Shipka in her first role since the series ended.

Natalia Dyer is moving from Hawkins to heart-eyes. Right after the Stranger Things series finale, the Nancy Wheeler standout lined up her next gig: a romantic comedy at Amazon MGM Studios called Goodbye Girl. She joins leads Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Cole Sprouse (Riverdale). Dyer's role is under wraps for now, and it's her first film since 2023's horror flick All Fun and Games.

The setup

"The film follows Jess (Shipka), who is a professional heartbreaker. Literally. When she is hired by a cowardly bride to dump her groom (Sprouse) days before their wedding, she not only fumbles the job… but falls hopelessly in love."

Who is steering this thing

  • Director: Oran Zegman
  • Screenplay: Danielle Hoover and David Monahan, from a story by Hoover, Monahan, and Jessica Elbaum
  • Producers: Mike Karz and William Bindley (Gulfstream Pictures); Dawn Bierschwal & Ryan Lewis (The RAD Lab); Daniel Wagner
  • Production: Starts this week in New Orleans
  • Studio: Amazon MGM Studios

Karz and Bindley have been bullish on the project since it was first announced, calling it a smart, character-first spin on the genre and singling out the cast and director for the blend of charm and bite. Their pitch sounds like the mission statement:

"Goodbye Girl is exactly the kind of elevated, character-driven romantic comedy we love to champion at Gulfstream. Kiernan and Cole bring incredible charm, wit, and emotional honesty to these roles, and Oran has such a fresh, confident voice as a director. This film is smart, funny, and heartfelt, and we are excited to be working with Dawn and Ryan and the rest of our stellar creative team."

Shipka breaking hearts for hire, Sprouse as the almost-groom, and Dyer stepping into the mix after a long run on one of TV's biggest shows—clean premise, solid trio, and cameras rolling immediately. Feels like a smooth pivot for Dyer and a rom-com with actual teeth for the rest of us.
