Murder in a Small Town Season 3 Renewed, Teases Its Darkest Mystery Yet
Season 2 may be over, but Murder in a Small Town isn’t slowing down: creator Ian Weir is already mapping Season 3’s cases and twists as Fox weighs an official renewal.
Season 2 of Canadian crime drama Murder in a Small Town just wrapped, but creator and showrunner Ian Weir is already sketching out Season 3 like the renewal is a done deal. It isn’t yet. He’s waiting on Fox. But he’s clearly not waiting to think.
Weir is optimistic, and he has numbers to point to
In a recent chat with Soaps.com, the acclaimed playwright turned showrunner said the show’s popularity has surged since its premiere and that the audience response this season hit exactly where he hoped it would. He also noted the ratings have kept climbing in a way that’s reassuring. The optimism is not subtle:
"I’m hoping like heck that the show is renewed."
Weir also admitted he’s already started cracking ideas for Season 3 storylines. Translation: the writers room whiteboard is not empty.
Where Season 2 left things
Season 2 ends with Karl proposing to Cassandra. The show then cuts to black without her answer. Cliffhanger cruelty is alive and well. There’s another thread dangling too: in Episode 10, Karl mentions he’s been in touch with his father. That’s not a throwaway line, and Weir knows it.
If Season 3 happens, here’s what Weir wants to dig into
- Karl’s past, including who he is carrying from it and who might step into the present. That Episode 10 nod to contact with his father is a door Weir clearly wants to walk through.
- The return of Warren, Cassandra’s problematic former friend. Weir says that relationship was pivotal for Cassandra and ties directly into her issues with trust and openness.
- More growth on the foundation Season 2 built. Weir believes the show has more legs and is treating Season 3 like a natural next step rather than a reset.
Renewal status
As of now, Fox has not officially renewed Murder in a Small Town for Season 3. Weir is ready to go the second they say yes.
