Mission Impossible 7 Character Death Spoilers Kind of Ruined the Movie Already
Along with the previous two films.
Dead Reckoning Part One, the new installment of the cult action-packed franchise Mission: Impossible, has just hit US theaters — and, according to the audience and critics' response, the new chapter in the IMF agents' story is no less of an emotional rollercoaster than any of the previous installments.
However, despite the fact that the film is generally well received, a number of aspects spoiled the impression for viewers. In particular, many can't help but complain about how the death of one of the main characters from Rogue Nation was handled. According to fans, the death was totally unjustified and completely devalued the character's role in the whole story.
'I don't know what else to say other than I am really bummed by this… of all the characters to kill off, why her?' one fan said, echoing the sentiment of the Mission: Impossible fandom.
Yes, the character we're talking about is Ilsa Faust, a skilled former MI6 member played by the magnificent Rebecca Ferguson.
She was first introduced in 2015's Rogue Nation as an undercover agent infiltrated by the Syndicate as an assassin and has since become a regular companion of Ethan Hunt and his team.
'There was seriously no need to kill Ilsa. Her death didn't up the stakes, didn't slow down the villain, didn't affect the team — they barely mourned her death, it was just a nothing death [that threw] away two films of character development.' another viewer complained. 'A total disservice to the character and took me out of the third act a fair bit.'
In the movie, Ilsa was killed by Gabriel, a terrorist who was once a friend of Ethan's, during the protagonists' pursuit of the key to accessing the powerful AI called the Entity. The scene was quite tragic, and Ethan, who was only seconds away from saving Ilsa, appeared utterly devastated with her death. Ultimately, it helped him and his team realize that Gabriel was a much more dangerous villain than they previously thought.
But even though Ilsa's death served its purpose for the 'IMF vs. Gabriel' storyline, fans felt that it completely devalued her development in Rogue Nation and Fallout. You would have expected her death to have more impact on external events and the characters themselves — but in reality, the only person mourning her death was Ethan, and he was forced to forget about it quickly as the plot moved on to the main events.
