Minnie Driver's Anne Bonny in OFMD Season 2 Based on a Very Real Person
The show is billed as a period comedy for a reason.
In 2022, the whole world fell in love with Max's Our Flag Means Death. This pirate-centric historical comedy became the perfect cosy, feel-good show that everyone desperately needed at the time. Thousands instantly adored the rag-tag crew of LGBTQ+ pirates, and the streaming service didn't hesitate to renew the series for a second season.
Despite some fans' concerns that Max would delay the release of the second instalment because of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the streaming giant decided the particular show must go on.
Indeed, it's official. The second season of OFMD will go live on Max this October, with the entire cast returning for more action, much to the delight of fans. However, Max decided to surprise fans even more by suddenly revealing that the second season is going to feature the iconic actress Minnie Driver as pirate Anne Bonny.
Just like the other characters on the show, such as Rhys Darby's Stede Bonnet and Taika Waititi's Blackbeard, Driver's character is actually based on a real person. Her origin story could reveal a lot about what will likely be going on in the upcoming season.
10 Whodunnit Shows That'll Keep You Guessing
Bonny was one of the most feared and ruthless pirates of the 18th century. She began her career as a pirate under the command of Calico Jack. While female pirates were rare at the time, Bonny proved herself more than a match for any of her male counterparts, robbing ships and seaside towns and evading the law for years throughout her career.
At one point, Bonny and her crew were captured by the authorities and sentenced to death by hanging. However, she managed to get her sentence postponed by being pregnant and was actually released afterwards, leaving her pirate life behind for a peaceful life on land.
While it's not clear if the second season of OFMD will stick to Bonny's true story, one thing is for certain: Driver is sure to bring something special to the show and provide the much-needed female representation in the pirate world.
Max has yet to announce the second season's release date.
