Mike Flanagan Enlists Supergirl Star Sasha Calle for The Exorcist
Scarlett Johansson teams with The Flash star Sasha Calle for Universal's The Exorcist, haunting theaters in 2027.
Universal is firing up The Exorcist again — and this time they brought in a filmmaker who actually loves horror. Mike Flanagan is steering a full-on reboot set to hit theaters March 12, 2027. That makes it only the second new Exorcist movie the studio has put out since 2005, after 2023's The Exorcist: Believer face-planted with fans and critics. Fresh start, new team, real shot at redemption.
Flanagan at the altar
Flanagan knows his way around big, haunted IP. He took Stephen King back to the big screen with Doctor Sleep in 2019 and followed it with The Life of Chuck in 2024. Now he gets to re-approach William Peter Blatty's world — the same source that powered the 1973 classic — with a clean slate. Plot details are locked down, but the goal is obvious: reframe this mythology with teeth, not nostalgia.
The cast is stacked with cape alumni
Universal is building a quietly loaded ensemble, and yes, it is heavy on actors who have worn a cape, saved a city, or yelled at one.
- Scarlett Johansson leads the film. MCU veteran, and she is also dipping into DC these days. No character reveal yet.
- Sasha Calle has joined in an undisclosed role. She just earned strong notices opposite Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in the Netflix drama The Rip, playing Desiree 'Desi' Lopez Molina. You probably also remember her as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in Andy Muschietti's The Flash, one of the DCEU's final outings.
- Laurence Fishburne is on board. He played Perry White in Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), then crossed the street to the MCU for Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) as Bill Foster.
- Chiwetel Ejiofor is in, bringing his Doctor Strange baggage as Baron Karl Mordo from both films to a very different kind of dark arts.
- Diane Lane joins the roster, a familiar face to DC fans as Martha Kent in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman.
- Jacobi Jupe is also confirmed. He was Michael Darling in Disney's 2023 Peter Pan & Wendy and appeared in Chloe Zhao's eight-time Oscar-nominated 2025 film Hamnet.
What they are not telling us (yet)
No one is saying who plays who. The studio has not shared story specifics or a production timeline either. The only thing etched in stone is the date: March 12, 2027, in theaters. Given how the last Exorcist outing landed, the secrecy feels strategic. And with Flanagan calling the shots and a cast this interesting, the reset might actually stick.
