Matt Dillon Rides Again in a Gritty TV Reboot of a Classic Western
Matt Dillon saddles up as Chris Adams in MGM+’s The Magnificent Seven, a bold TV reimagining of the 1960 Western—and his first major series role since Wayward Pines.
Matt Dillon is heading back to series TV, and he is doing it with a six-shooter. The Oscar nominee (Crash) will lead MGM+’s new take on The Magnificent Seven, playing Chris Adams — the role Yul Brynner made iconic in the 1960 Western that itself reworked Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai. It has been a minute since Dillon anchored a show; his last big TV lead was M. Night Shyamalan’s 2015 series Wayward Pines. Good to have that flinty stare back.
What this version is actually doing
Set on the American frontier in the 1880s, this reimagining starts with a peaceful Quaker village torn apart by a massacre carried out by hired guns working for a ruthless land baron who wants their land. Seven mercenaries — talented, flawed, and not exactly choir boys — take the job of protecting what is left of the community. As they dig in and brace for a lopsided fight, the story pushes a thorny idea right to the front:
"Is violence acceptable to defend people whose faith is based on non-violence?"
The plan is to track each of the Seven through their pasts and personal stakes, leaning hard on themes of honor, sacrifice, redemption, morality, and faith.
So who is Chris Adams now?
Dillon’s Adams runs this crew. He is the kind of leader who does not waste words, keeps his head when things go sideways, and lets an unblinking gaze do half the talking. He is allergic to cruelty and hypocrisy, and he sticks to a quiet code built on fairness and restraint. The assignment is simple on paper: keep innocent people safe and stop a mercenary land baron from stealing their home. On the ground, not so simple.

"Matt Dillon brings extraordinary depth and gravitas to this iconic role. His ability to portray complex, morally conflicted characters makes him the perfect choice to lead our reimagining of The Magnificent Seven. This series honors the legacy of the original film while exploring timeless themes about courage, redemption, and standing up against oppression — and Matt’s performance will be at the heart of that story."
Another pass at one of the most remade stories around could feel like a retread, but Dillon as the taciturn center of gravity is promising. The Quaker angle, paired with that big moral question, gives this version a sharper edge. Now we wait for cameras to roll in 2026.
