Massive Young Sheldon Inconsistency That Literally No One Cared About
This one startles even the most loyal Young Sheldon fans.
An offshoot of CBS' iconic sitcom The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon hit the screens in 2017. Since then, the prequel show has spanned six seasons and attracted hordes of fans who are now looking forward to seeing Season 7, set to be the series' last.
Being a prequel show, Young Sheldon has to follow the canon established by the parent series. And while it has so far accurately abided by the main storylines provided in TBBT, the spin-off still managed to outrage diehard fans with a number of inconsistencies, deviating the story from the canon. But for some reason, the most obvious inconsistency of all went largely unnoticed by the fandom.
Young Sheldon is a recollection of events presented by adult Sheldon himself: we hear him narrate and comment on certain moments of the story every now and again. And though this framing approach seems organic in the plotlines that concern the character directly, it's a bit odd to hear Sheldon narrate the stories that he wasn't part of in the first place.
In the episode 'Little Green Men and a Fella's Marriage Proposal,' Sheldon's narration accompanies his sister Missy's arc when she decides to attend her schoolmate's party instead of going to the movies with Billy as she promised earlier. Perhaps the idea is that Sheldon learned about the incident later from his sister or other family members, but his inexplicable omniscience seems to undermine the show's integrity.
In addition, Sheldon appears much more knowledgeable and emotionally mature at the time of his narration for Young Sheldon, compared to the TBBT version of the character.
For instance, consider Mary's miscarriage that happens in Episode 17, Season 2. While young Shelly is utterly oblivious to the cause of his mother's depression – in fact, the boy thinks he has misbehaved and upset his mommy – adult Sheldon realizes what brought Mary so much pain, both physical and psychological.
Other proof of the character's emotional growth, compared to his TBBT version, is the fact that Sheldon recognizes his mistake in not being thankful enough to his father while the man was still alive.
All in all, the protagonist's all-concerning narration seems to be Young Shelson's biggest inconsistency so far, but perhaps the writers will address this issue in the final season – for example, by revealing that Sheldon is now an elderly scientist with plenty of life experience and a healthy relationship with his family (and of course, a couple more Nobel prizes under his belt).
