Major websites and popular games are buckling under widespread outages and glitches, leaving millions unable to connect.

If half the internet felt cursed today, you were not imagining it. A chunk of everyday apps and games decided to faceplant at once, and the common thread looks like trouble over at Amazon Web Services.

What broke, and why your stuff suddenly would not load

Amazon Web Services (AWS) had an issue that knocked a bunch of connected services off balance. That ripple hit games like Fortnite and Roblox, and even everyday tools like Slack and Wordle. So if your morning looked like Slack chaos and a Wordle meltdown, yeah, same.

The current state of play

  • Fortnite: Epic says log-ins are impacted because of a broader internet outage. As of now, Fortnite is down.
  • Roblox: The company called it a widespread outage tied to AWS. At 10:08am BST, they said AWS put in a fix and they were seeing partial recovery.
  • Wordle: Reports spiked on DownDetector. It is working for some people, not for others.
  • Slack: Also wobbly, because of course your work chat would pick today to spiral.
  • AWS: Multiple services are currently disrupted, with the issue traced to the US-EAST-1 region. AWS posted a technical update at 10:01am BST and promised another status update by 10:45am BST, if not earlier.

The technical bit (translated)

AWS says the trouble started with DNS resolution for a DynamoDB API endpoint in its US-EAST-1 region. That region is a huge traffic hub, and when it sneezes, a lot of the internet catches a cold. The fallout also hits features that depend on US-EAST-1, like IAM updates and DynamoDB Global Tables, which is why you see such a wide blast radius.

"Based on our investigation, the issue appears to be related to DNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint in US-EAST-1. We are working on multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery. This issue also affects other AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region. Global services or features that rely on US-EAST-1 endpoints such as IAM updates and DynamoDB Global tables may also be experiencing issues."

So when does this end?

AWS says another status check is coming by 10:45am BST. Roblox is already reporting early signs of life after a fix on AWS's side, which is a good sign. If Fortnite still refuses to let you in, that is likely tied to the same root problem and should resolve as recovery rolls out.

Bottom line: if your go-to game or app is being stubborn, it is not you. It is the cloud having a day.
