Marshals Star Luke Grimes Nearly Passed on the Yellowstone Spinoff — Here’s Why
Marshals blasted out of the gate, but star Luke Grimes nearly passed—he first saw the Yellowstone spin-off pitch as a terrible idea before signing back on as Kayce Dutton.
Marshals just dropped its first episode and came out swinging. Funny thing is, Luke Grimes almost didn’t come back for it. The Yellowstone star needed convincing before he signed on to another tour as Kayce Dutton.
His first reaction? Hard pass
Grimes has been the steady center of Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western sprawl for years, but when the third Yellowstone spin-off landed on his plate, the pitch did not thrill him. As he put it in a recent interview:
"How about a Kayce Dutton procedural? That sounded really terrible, to be honest. I thought that was a crazy idea."
Timing didn’t help. He was in the middle of filming Yellowstone’s final episode, he liked how it closed Kayce’s arc, and he wasn’t eager to mess with that. He says it took a while before the idea started to feel right.
What changed his mind
Enter showrunner Spencer Hudnut, who reframed the whole thing. This wouldn’t be a cookie-cutter case-of-the-week, he promised.
"No procedural you’ve seen before."
The 42-year-old actor and musician says the show uses mission-of-the-week momentum as a tool, while bigger storylines thread through multiple episodes and even seasons. So you still get a payoff at the end of each hour, but the character and plot work keeps stacking.
So what is Marshals?
The series follows Kayce as he signs on with an elite U.S. Marshals task force tasked with protecting the state of Montana. It’s a setup built for tactical ops and fallout, which, yes, fits Kayce like a glove.

The premiere is out now. If you were bracing for a paint-by-numbers procedural, Grimes’ about-face suggests this thing’s aiming for something twistier.
