Longlegs star Maika Monroe finally breaks her silence on It Follows 2, delivering a major status update on the long-awaited sequel to the 2014 cult horror—and teasing what’s next for Jay and the shape-shifting entity only she can see.

Maika Monroe just cracked the door open on It Follows 2, and yes, it sounds real, and yes, it sounds different. If you loved the first one but don’t want a lazy retread, this update is promising.

Where things stand

In a new chat with Discussing Film, the Longlegs star said she’s read the latest script and is on board with where it’s headed. The big takeaway: this isn’t a carbon copy of the 2014 cult hit. Monroe calls the sequel more grounded and centered on the inner lives of its characters, not just the spooky mechanics.

"I was sent the script and I thought it was incredible. It’s also very different from the original... I felt the original was a little more heightened and dramatic, and this I think is really quite grounded. [The sequel] follows the story of these two women that are just mentally dealing with a lot. I thought it was a really interesting take on it. Fingers crossed it happens, next year is the rumor."

Quick refresher if it’s been a minute: Monroe played Jay in the first film, a college student stalked by a shape-shifting presence only she can see. The new movie is expected to pick up roughly ten years later, with Monroe returning as Jay.

Who’s making it and when

  • David Robert Mitchell is back to direct and produce.
  • NEON is producing the sequel.
  • Producers on board include Jake Weiner, Chris Bender, David Kaplan, Erik Rommesmo, Rebecca Green, and Laura Smith.
  • Monroe says the chatter is that production could kick off next year. Nothing locked, but that’s the current rumor.

Why this matters to fans of the original

The first It Follows wasn’t just a horror indie that got people talking; it stuck. Mitchell wrote and directed it, with a cast led by Monroe alongside Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi, Daniel Zovatto, Lili Sepe, Debbie Williams, and more. It pulled in over $23 million worldwide during its theatrical run and has held a 95% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes from 271 reviews. That’s a lot of goodwill to either honor or squander.

Based on Monroe’s comments, the sequel isn’t trying to chase the exact same highs, which honestly might be the smartest move here. Grounded character focus, two women at the center, a time jump, and the original filmmaker steering the ship again — that’s a solid starting place. Now we wait to see if that rumored start next year actually happens.
