The once-popular award show is no longer relevant.

Since 1984, audiences worldwide have tuned into MTV's Video Music Awards. Initially, the awards ceremony was hailed as a sanctuary for unique and pioneering artists, showcasing bands like Nirvana, Metallica, and Foo Fighters. But as the show became a significant revenue stream for MTV, a surge of pop artists began receiving invites, distancing many of MTV's more underground followers. Nevertheless, the ceremonies remained fun for several more years.

While recent VMAs may be seen as just another lacklustre award ceremony, we owe many unforgettable moments to MTV's older VMAs. One particularly contentious incident occurred precisely twenty years ago.

Queens Of Pop

Of course, we're talking about Madonna's infamous three-way kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 VMAs. The spectacle— from the singers emerging from a mammoth wedding cake to the sultry musical number and the kiss— cemented that particular show's status, drawing millions of viewers to MTV.

While that moment has secured its place in pop culture history, the VMAs' current trajectory suggests they might be fading into obscurity. What was once a groundbreaking ceremony has now turned into yet another boring award ceremony little different from the Oscars or Grammys. It's been an awfully long time since it featured any controversial incidents or performances to engage today's audiences.

Nothing To Remember

Since that iconic Madonna moment, no VMA event has resonated as deeply. Even the more talked-about instances, such as Kanye's interruption of Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga's meat dress, seem almost pedestrian next to Madonna's audacity.

'This definitely feels like one of the last times they really shocked. past this, I would say Miley and Robin Thicke, and maybe Gaga's Paparazzi performance with the blood, or the meat dress year. Miley vs Nicki 'what's good?' perhaps... that's probably the last of it,' a fan said.

Regrettably, the VMAs seem to be on a downward spiral, and not even the presence of mega-stars can reverse this trend.
