Fans of HBO's signature style should check out this show.

Without a doubt, HBO is still widely regarded as one of the most prestigious and respected networks, even though streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime have been attempting to dethrone it as a monopolist of high-quality television for almost a decade now. HBO's recent massive hits like Succession, The Last of Us, and House of the Dragon prove that the network has no intention of letting its competitors steal the reins from it.

Apart from the current roster of hit shows, HBO boasts arguably the best back catalog in television history, with shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, and Game of Thrones frequently being named the most iconic series of the 21st century. There is one iconic show, however, that often gets omitted when HBO's best of the best are mentioned. That show is Deadwood.

Show Worth Watching

For starters, Deadwood is quite an old show, premiering all the way back in 2004 and running for three seasons until 2006. So, the first season will be turning twenty years old next year, but that shouldn't dissuade you from checking the show out. Thanks to its Wild West setting, the series doesn't look one bit dated, as HBO really spent a lot of money on props, costumes, and locations, helping Deadwood stand the test of time even in 2023.

Moreover, this ingenious cowboy show is headlined by two great actors still relevant today - Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane, both of whom chew the scenery like nobody's business, flexing their acting muscles for three seasons straight.

Great writing, good old-fashioned intrigues, and generally impressive shoot-out scenes make Deadwood a must-see for all HBO fans. The show was obviously not given enough time to really come into its own, being eclipsed by The Sopranos and The Wire's caliber, but it's still the best old-west series on the market.

Moreover, HBO produced a sequel, Deadwood: The Movie, back in 2019, which was well-received by fans and critics alike, finally allowing the show to break into the mainstream after spending two decades away from the spotlight.

Give Deadwood a chance!
