LOTR Star Elijah Wood Isn’t Done With Frodo—Not In This Lifetime
Nearly 25 years after first trekking through the Shire, 45-year-old Elijah Wood says he’s ready to don Frodo Baggins’ cloak again for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum — and keep playing the hobbit as long as he’s able.
Middle-earth is calling again, and Elijah Wood sounds game to pick up Frodo Baggins' pack one more time. Almost 25 years after his first trek out of the Shire, the 45-year-old actor is warming to the idea of returning for a new trip into Tolkien's world.
So, what is The Hunt for Gollum?
- Director: Andy Serkis
- Target release: 2027
- Story window: set between the end of The Hobbit trilogy and the start of The Lord of the Rings
Official casting is still under wraps, but Wood is not exactly dodging the question. In a recent interview, he hinted that the door is very much open and that he is eager if the stars align.
It has not been officially announced, but at a convention last August, Ian sort of let the cat out of the bag. So there is a good chance. I am not able to officially say anything until it is announced, but I will say I am thrilled with the prospect of another film.
He knows fans get protective about Middle-earth getting another spin, and honestly, fair. Wood says the new story is fun and propulsive, and that there is a real 'getting the band back together' energy to it. That tracks, given who is involved and where the film fits on the timeline.
Frodo, forever (if he has a say)
When asked about Ian McKellen once saying he would not let anyone else play Gandalf, Wood backed that up and extended the same logic to Frodo.
I certainly would not want anybody else to play Frodo either as long as I am alive and able.
Wood first carried the One Ring in 2001's The Fellowship of the Ring and later popped back in for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. He is also, by his own admission, still a fan sitting in the dark like the rest of us.
I can also recognize what fun that is going to be — when you are in the cinema and you see the hat turn around and it is Gandalf.
For now, we wait on the official word. If everything clicks, do not be shocked if Frodo finds his way back onto the road once more.
