Looks Like Sweet Magnolias Fans Lost Patience With a Certain Actor

Sweet Magnolias, the heartwarming story of longtime friends Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen in the South Carolinian town of Serenity, has captured the hearts of many viewers since it premiered on Netflix in 2020.

However, the melodrama has had a number of questionable moments, with fans feeling strong negative vibes from some of the actors working on the show.

While these actors aren't doing anything wrong, fans just can't tolerate certain details of their characters and acting performances. And it looks like people have grown particularly tired of one cast member after Season 3 — Justin Bruening — and they're now urging the producers to either fire the actor or change his character, Cal Maddox.

Although Cal seems like a pretty positive guy and good partner for the recently divorced Maddie, fans just can't stand him being so close to the heroine, arguing that he is pretty questionable as a boyfriend and possible foster father.

'I feel he doesn't really have a personality. He follows Maddie around, constantly saying sweet things and touching. He's trying to be a father figure to these kids by just going with the flow with their interests. What are his hobbies?' a fan wondered on Reddit.

Obviously, these problems with Cal as a character have nothing to do with Justin Bruening himself. It looks like the writers don't know what to do with his character and are just using him as a human prop.

However, Bruening is partly responsible for his character being so hated, as his questionable acting and poorly styled hair have angered fans since Season 1. Yes, it's undeniable that the actor has great looks, but viewers would like him to give them more than just gleaming white teeth and a perfect facial structure.

'He definitely could use a different hairstyle. That would help! Partially I think it is how his character is written too. I don't think the actor is bad looking. They're just doing him dirty with that hair. Maybe it's the wardrobe too?' another fan said.

Anyway, it looks like Cal is really not that appealing to viewers anymore, and the writers should either write him off the show completely or find a way to make him interesting again.
