Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese’s next team-up keeps getting bigger, with Jared Harris — famed for portraying Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows — joining the stacked ensemble of What Happens at Night.

Scorsese and DiCaprio are back at it, and they just brought in a ringer: Jared Harris. Yes, the guy who gave Sherlock Holmes the Moriarty he deserved is hopping aboard this one. Between that and the already-stacked cast, this thing keeps leveling up.

The project

The film is called 'What Happens at Night,' with Martin Scorsese directing and producing through Sikelia Productions. Apple Original Films is backing it alongside Studiocanal. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence lead the ensemble, with Patricia Clarkson and Mads Mikkelsen also in the mix. Patrick Marber wrote the screenplay, adapting Peter Cameron's novel.

  • Director/Producer: Martin Scorsese (via Sikelia)

  • Also starring: Patricia Clarkson, Mads Mikkelsen, Jared Harris

  • Financiers: Apple Original Films with Studiocanal
  • Where it shoots: starts in Prague, then New York City for the final stretch

What it is

The setup is a quietly eerie one: an American couple heads to a remote, snowbound European town to adopt a baby, checks into a massive, nearly empty hotel, and keeps running into larger-than-life strangers — a flamboyant chanteuse, a sleazy businessman, and a faith healer with serious presence. The story leans surreal, a chilly mood piece where identities blur and the ground keeps shifting beneath the couple as they push to bring their child home.

'Dream-like' is the official vibe, and 'nothing is quite as it seems.'

Scorsese, DiCaprio, and Apple just delivered a monster awards contender with 'Killers of the Flower Moon,' which pulled in 10 Oscar nominations, so this reunion is not exactly low-key. Lawrence, meanwhile, already has history with Apple thanks to 'Causeway' and the documentary 'Bread & Roses,' and she is set to star in and produce 'The Wives' next.

About Jared Harris

Harris, who has played Holmes' arch-nemesis Moriarty, brings a deep bench of credits. On the film side: 'I Shot Andy Warhol,' 'The Last of the Mohicans,' 'Natural Born Killers,' 'Igby Goes Down,' and 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.' On TV: 'Mad Men,' 'The Crown,' and 'The Terror,' plus a Golden Globe nomination for 'Chernobyl.'
