Kevin Smith Reveals The One Actor He Wants To Succeed Alan Rickman In Dogma 2
Kevin Smith has a divine casting pick for a still-hypothetical Dogma 2: Oscar winner Helen Mirren to step into Metatron, the role the late Alan Rickman made iconic.
Kevin Smith has a plan for the angel-shaped hole Alan Rickman left in Dogma. And by plan, I mean a very specific actor in mind and about 30 script pages sitting on his laptop. The role he wants to fill is big, the choice is bold, and the sequel itself is still somewhere between idea and reality.
Who Smith wants as Rickman’s spiritual successor
On /Film’s Weekly Podcast, Smith said he’s aiming high: he wants Helen Mirren to step in for the late Alan Rickman in Dogma 2. He even called her "incredibly Alan-adjacent" — which, as compliments go, is pretty much a bullseye. Mirren, yes, that Helen Mirren (Oscar winner, currently in 1923), is who he’s writing toward.
"I’m writing it for Helen Mirren."
Not the same Metatron, by design
Important clarification: Smith isn’t trying to have Mirren do a Rickman impression. She wouldn’t be playing the exact Metatron fans know from the 1999 film. It would be a new take crafted specifically for Dogma 2 — different character, same celestial lane.
The unexpected casting journey
Smith told a very him story about how he got there. Years ago, he met Mirren and Rickman together at an Empire movie awards ceremony — the kind of brief, real-world crossover that sticks in your brain. When he later started thinking about Dogma 2 without Rickman, his first mental detour was Adam Driver, because, in his words, Driver looks like a younger, taller Rickman. Then he backed off that idea and landed on Mirren, saying the writer and romantic in him could find the connective tissue to make it make sense.
So... is Dogma 2 actually happening?
Short answer: not yet. One day before the /Film chat, Smith told MovieWeb he’s taking his time and has written 30 pages. He paused work for other, unspecified commitments, and in a separate interview with the same outlet, he said he stopped writing to focus on a different project — a period piece set in the 1950s. That’s not nothing, but it’s also not a greenlight.
Where we are right now
- Original Dogma refresher: Alan Rickman played the angel Metatron, alongside Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Salma Hayek, and more.
- Smith’s current plan: Helen Mirren would step into a newly written angelic role — not the exact Metatron from the first film.
- The thought process: He momentarily considered Adam Driver, then pivoted to Mirren after remembering meeting her with Rickman years ago.
- Script status: About 30 pages exist. Work paused for other commitments.
- What’s next: Smith is currently busy on a separate 1950s-set period project, so Dogma 2 remains a slow burn.
If this ever comes together, Mirren in that world is a killer swing. For now, Dogma 2 is a compelling what-if with a very classy target in its sights.
