If you're in the mood to rack your brain, here's an interesting question for you. Why are all the best sitcoms from the 2000s? Just think about it! Friends, The Big Bang Theory, The Office, 30 Rock, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia – they all aired throughout the decade, earning it the moniker of the funniest era of TV. And with that in mind, it would be unfair not to mention another cult comedy show, The King of Queens.
Debuting in 1998, The King of Queens became an instant hit, going into syndication just two years after its release. The show, beloved by millions of viewers, told the story of Doug and Carrie Hefferman, a middle-class family living in the titular NYC neighborhood with Carrie's father, Arthur, who accidentally burned down his own house. The sitcom proved so popular with audiences that it ran for a whopping nine seasons.
Needless to say, fans of The King of Queens have been calling for a reboot of the show for years. Unfortunately, that demand isn't going to be met.
The King of Queens' Lead Rejects Bringing the Show Back
During its nine-season run, TKoQ turned its cast into the ultimate comedy stars. Kevin James, who portrayed Doug on the show, is still most associated with the iconic role. And recently, the actor gave an unequivocal answer about the possibility of reviving the sitcom.
'I don't think we can [reboot The King of Queens], man, because we had Jerry. Jerry Stiller was such a part of that show. I would not want to do it without him. He just, he's amazing. I love him. I miss him. He's amazing!' Kevin James said of his former co-star who played Arthur on the show and, sadly, passed away in 2020.
Kevin James on The King of Queens' Legacy
The CBS hit has undeniably left an indelible mark on pop culture. And even though it aired in the 2000s, it remains relevant to modern audiences, who stream The King of Queens on multiple platforms. Most importantly, the show remains an integral part of Kevin James' life, as the actor still gets nostalgic for his former co-stars from time to time.
'They were the greatest. Leah [Remini] is incredible. It was so much fun to do, and such a great time in my life, and it was like, you know… I get to see it still, it's on, so people, you know, still come up to me now. Younger generations,' James commented on the show's significance.
The King of Queens is available to stream on Paramount+ and Amazon Prime Video.
