Katie Holmes' Engagement Ring From Tom Cruise Now Worth Crazy Amount of Money
Love knows no bounds, especially when it comes to the marriage of two international stars steeped in the glitz and glamor of Hollywood.
When Tom Cruise suddenly proposed to Katie Holmes, the duo dominated the headlines. When their marriage came to an equally abrupt end in 2012, it was just as newsworthy. A decade later, one thing has remained constant: The value of the five-carat, oval-cut white diamond engagement ring he gave her.
That ring is now worth between $2 million and $2.2 million, making it one of the 20 most expensive celebrity engagement rings, according to Brides.com.
From the start, their relationship generated stories. In 2004, Katie Holmes was a 25-year-old television star, formerly of Dawson's Creek. Tom Cruise, 42, had been nominated for three Oscars as one of the most recognizable blockbuster stars of the past two decades. Katie publicly admitted to Seventeen magazine that year that she had a long-standing crush on Cruise, dating back to her childhood.
Dawson's Creek co-star Mary Beth Peil said in a 2018 interview that Katie would 'launch into a big spiel' about Cruise's previous marriage, his Scientology beliefs, and everything else about his life. She said Holmes told her that she'd had posters of Cruise adorning her walls as a 15-year-old.
Less than a year later, the two announced they were in a relationship. And who can forget that bizarre Oprah interview, when he lept on the couch and proposed his love for his new girlfriend. Cruise proposed to Katie at the Eiffel Tower in June 2005, just two months after their relationship went public.
Glamour's Kim Fusaro gave details about the ring, which was created by celebrity jeweler Fred Leighton, whose pieces have been featured in Marie Antoinette, The Devil Wears Prada and Sex and the City. The ring was originally valued at $1.5 million. Over the past 18 years, its value has increased by at least 33% - a steep increase for a purchase that generally depreciates in value.
At its current $2.2 million valuation by Brides.com, it is listed as the 17th most expensive celebrity ring. While there are very few women with rings between $1 million and $5 million - Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Kate Upton, for example - the record number is staggering.
The most expensive ring ever was given to Grace Kelly by Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956. The 10.47-carat emerald-cut ring was originally worth $4 million. Today, adjusted for inflation, it's worth $44.3 million.
Neither Katie nor Cruise are married today. Holmes has had a string of high-profile relationships, including with Jamie Foxx. After his divorce from Holmes - which was his third - Cruise also had several high-profile relationships, including his current relationship with music icon Shakira.
