Middle-earth calls again: Warner Bros will release The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum in US theaters in 2027, with Andy Serkis directing, Ian McKellen back as Gandalf, Kate Winslet joining the cast, and fresh plot details emerging.

Middle-earth just landed Kate Winslet. That sound you hear is a million casting wishlists high-fiving at once.

So, what changed?

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum just locked in Winslet for a role that is being kept under wraps, but she is expected to be the female lead. Andy Serkis is directing and also slipping back into Gollum mode, with Ian McKellen returning as Gandalf. Warner Bros. plans to release the film in U.S. theaters on December 17, 2027.

Here is the fun, slightly nerdy casting history: Winslet once turned down the role of Eowyn in Peter Jackson's original trilogy, a part that ultimately went to Miranda Otto. Now she is finally heading to Middle-earth after Serkis and Jackson spent much of last year persuading her. That pitch apparently worked, because she will relocate with her family to New Zealand to shoot from late May through October. She knows the terrain — she filmed Jackson's 1994 movie Heavenly Creatures there.

The story they are telling

This one zeroes in on Aragorn hunting down Gollum before the creature can spill the Ring's location to Sauron. The timeline sits between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, with much of the narrative drawn from Tolkien's footnotes — the deep-cut stuff fans love to argue about.

Who else is back?

Elijah Wood has been rumored to return as Frodo Baggins. Nothing official yet, but he did tease it this week:

"There is a good chance" he is in the movie, but he is "not able to officially say anything until it’s announced."

  • Rumored: Elijah Wood (Frodo), not confirmed

Winslet’s recent run

On the awards front, Winslet won the Best Actress Oscar for The Reader and has nominations for Sense and Sensibility, Titanic, Iris, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Little Children, and Steve Jobs. She also picked up Emmys for Mildred Pierce and Mare of Easttown. Recently, she returned as Ronal in Avatar: Fire and Ash and made her feature film directorial debut with Netflix's Goodbye June.

Long story short: Serkis is building a gritty, footnote-fueled chase movie in Middle-earth, and he just added one of the best actors alive. That should perk up even the most cautious hobbit.
